The journey to the 2026 FIFA World Cup began back in October 2023 with a goal from Myanmar’s Lwin Moe Aung. Fast forward to today, February 6, 2026, and the field is nearly set. With the tournament expanding to 48 nations, the stakes have never been higher.
While the hosts—USA, Mexico, and Canada—have their spots secured, 39 of the 45 remaining slots have now been filled. Here is the state of play as we head into the final high-stakes playoffs this March.
🌍 Europe (UEFA): Powerhouses and Heartbreak
Europe’s group stage concluded in a flurry of drama this past November. Twelve teams have already booked their flights, including Erling Haaland’s Norway, qualifying for their first World Cup since 1998, and Scotland, who secured a historic return thanks to a last-minute winner against Denmark.
The Automatic Qualifiers: England, France, Croatia, Norway, Portugal, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Scotland, Spain, Austria, and Belgium.
The Last Chance Saloon: 16 teams are headed to the UEFA playoffs on March 26 and 31. Only four will survive. Italy finds itself in familiar, nervous territory after falling to Norway, while “giant-killers” like North Macedonia and Kosovo look to play spoiler.
Path A: Italy vs. Northern Ireland | Wales vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina
Path B: Ukraine vs. Sweden | Poland vs. Albania
Path C: Turkey vs. Romania | Slovakia vs. Kosovo
Path D: Denmark vs. North Macedonia | Czechia vs. Republic of Ireland
🌎 Concacaf: History Made
With the big three hosting, only three automatic spots were up for grabs in North America, Central America, and the Caribbean.
Panama clinched their spot on a dramatic final day.
Haiti returns to the world stage after defeating Nicaragua.
Curaçao made history, becoming the smallest nation ever to qualify for a World Cup, holding off Jamaica in a tense 0-0 draw.
🕒 The Final Countdown: Interconfederation Playoffs
The very last two tickets to the World Cup will be punched between March 23 and 31 in the interconfederation playoffs. Six teams from across the globe will battle in two mini-brackets:
New Caledonia vs. Jamaica (Winner plays DR Congo)
Bolivia vs. Suriname (Winner plays Iraq)
By the beginning of April, the full 48-team roster for the greatest show on Earth will finally be complete!
