Welcome to Vancouver, future World Cup legend! We’re thrilled to have you staying with us for the biggest football event on the planet. To help you make the most of your match day experience at BC Place, we’ve put together this handy guide.
1. Getting to BC Place Stadium
BC Place is conveniently located in downtown Vancouver, making it easily accessible from our rental units.
- Walking: Many of our units are within a 15-25 minute walk of BC Place. It’s a great way to soak in the pre-match atmosphere!
- SkyTrain (Recommended): Vancouver’s rapid transit system is incredibly efficient.
- Stadium–Chinatown Station: This is the closest station, directly adjacent to BC Place.
- Expo Line & Millennium Line: Both lines serve Stadium–Chinatown Station.
- Canada Line: If you’re coming from the airport or Richmond, take the Canada Line to Waterfront Station, then transfer to the Expo or Millennium Line for one stop to Stadium–Chinatown, or enjoy a pleasant 15-minute walk from Waterfront to BC Place.
- Tickets: You can purchase single-use tickets, day passes, or tap your contactless credit card/mobile pay at any SkyTrain station.
- Buses: Several bus routes also serve the area around BC Place. Use Google Maps or TransLink’s Trip Planner for real-time bus information.
- Taxis/Rideshares: Taxis and rideshare services (Uber, Lyft) are available, but expect increased demand and potential surge pricing on match days, especially right before and after games. It’s often easier to walk a few blocks away from the immediate stadium crowds if you plan to use these services.
2. Pre and Post-Match Dining & Drinking
The area around BC Place, and downtown Vancouver in general, is packed with fantastic options to fuel up before the game or celebrate/debrief afterwards.
Close to BC Place (Crosstown/Yaletown/Gastown):
- The Pint Public House (455 Abbott St): A classic sports bar directly across from BC Place, known for its lively atmosphere, extensive tap list, and pub grub. Expect it to be packed!
- Library Square Public House (300 W Georgia St): A large pub with a great patio, good food, and plenty of screens, just a short walk away.
- Yaletown Brewing Company (1111 Mainland St): A popular brewpub in the trendy Yaletown neighborhood, offering craft beers and a vibrant scene. A great option if you want to be slightly away from the immediate stadium rush.
- Gastown (Water St): A historic district just a 10-15 minute walk from BC Place, offering a range of pubs, fine dining, and casual eateries. Check out Steamworks Brewpub or The Lamplighter Public House for a lively atmosphere.
- Parq Vancouver (39 Smithe St): This entertainment complex next to BC Place offers several dining options from casual to upscale, including The Sportsbar Live! at Parq.
Other Recommended Areas (Easy Transit Access):
- Granville Street: Famous for its entertainment district, you’ll find numerous bars and restaurants, from casual to more upscale. Many will have World Cup viewing parties.
- Robson Street: Excellent for a wide variety of restaurants, particularly Asian cuisine, and shopping.
- Main Street (Mount Pleasant): If you’re looking for craft breweries, this is your spot. A quick SkyTrain ride or bus will get you there.
3. Important Stadium Information & Tips
- Arrive Early: Gates typically open 90 minutes to 2 hours before kick-off. Arriving early allows you to enjoy the pre-match festivities, grab food/drinks, and find your seats without rushing.
- Bag Policy: BC Place has a strict bag policy. Only small personal bags (purses, small backpacks) are allowed, usually no larger than 14” x 14” x 6”. Larger bags, including most backpacks, are prohibited. Check the official BC Place website closer to the date for the exact policy for World Cup matches.
- Security: Be prepared for security checks upon entry, including metal detectors.
- Cashless Venue: BC Place is generally a cashless venue. Be ready to pay with credit card, debit, or mobile pay.
- Merchandise: Official FIFA World Cup merchandise will be available inside and outside the stadium.
- Fan Zones: Keep an eye out for official FIFA Fan Zones in downtown Vancouver – these will be fantastic places to soak up the atmosphere even if you don’t have a match ticket!
- Weather: Vancouver in June/July is typically warm and pleasant, but rain is always a possibility. Check the forecast and dress in layers if needed. The stadium has a retractable roof, so you’ll be covered inside!
- Stay Hydrated: With all the excitement, it’s easy to forget to drink water. Many venues will have water fountains or places to refill bottles.
4. Local Etiquette & Enjoying Vancouver
- Friendly City: Vancouverites are generally very friendly and happy to help. Don’t hesitate to ask for directions or recommendations.
- Tipping: Tipping is customary in Canadian restaurants, bars, and for services. 15-20% is standard for good service.
- Public Transit: Be mindful of others on public transit. Offer your seat to those who need it more.
- Explore Beyond the Game: If you have extra time, consider visiting Stanley Park, Granville Island, taking a ferry to Victoria, or exploring the North Shore mountains.
We hope this guide helps you have an incredible FIFA World Cup experience in Vancouver! We’re just as excited as you are for the matches at BC Place.
Enjoy the games, and Go You!
